Hello from the UK

Post by hobbit666 »

All all.

I'm Neil (aka Hobbit) and a live in sunny (well at the moment it is) Wales in the UK.

I really really really ... etc want to build my own 3d printer and like the Rostock design. But can't find suppliers for some of the parts like the RAMBo boards :(. Anyway that's for me to solve lol

Thought i would just say Hi from over the pond :)

Also a quick question on the building what material is the base/table made from and what thinkness? i've found a company local that will Laser cut the parts for me.

Also as a side note are DIY 3d printers a bit of a catch 22? As most plans i have downloaded come with the STL files for all the parts but yet you need a 3d printer to print them lol.

The melamine is .265 to .267" depending on where I measure. I live in southern California.

You're money ahead for the full kit.

That's about 7mm in new money. You could probably use 6mm plywood* if you're willing to edit the CAD files. (Make all the slots thinner and all the tabs shorter.) It might even come out better than the melamine version -- plywood is stiffer. Or give it a few coats of polyurethane to get it up to thickness.

Ultimachine.com sells RAMBo. I don't know whether they ship to the UK.

* Am I right? Is 6mm a standard thickness in Wales and the rest of the EU?

Yeah looks like 6mm or 9mm is the common sizes.

I'm not going to buy a kit :( as i'm planning to spread the cost over 4-6months and build it bit by it. So it's going to be a full DIY project.

Out of stock at the mo but looking at shipping terms they do ship all over but warn on import tax etc etc

Might just use a RAMPS for the first build as I can get it off Ebay with the motor driver thingy's

is this "melamine" stuff plastic? or is it a wood?

Trying to get some quotes for the laser cutting.

Melamine board is particle board with paper laminated to it with melamine resin ( which is made from melamine & formaldehyde).

Thinking on that, I wonder if formaldehyde melts PLA.
