Re: The story of my 6ft tall printer

I dunno about counterweights - they increase the mass and therefore the force required for acceleration. How about setting up a landing pad of some sort for the effector platform, and setting up the G-code to drive to that position at the end of the print?

Re: Enclosure build to print ABS and Nylon bigger and faster

Geneb, ok, would you believe _this_ much? :D Found a local supplier of nutserts that were too big for the holes, but only just. Hot slipped those puppies in and they're tight enough for this application. Cut up my panels and screwed 'em in except for the front and I'm generally pleased. Now I just h...

Re: Height of hotend when paused

The exact how depends on what host software you're using. MatterControl has a custom g-code section in the settings for the printer where you can enter code for pause, resume and cancel. I do it by sending the G-code (not available to me where I am today, sorry) to put the printer into incremental m...

I'd say install a copy of the free netfabb tool... Nope... No Mac version. OR'LY Your google-fu is weak, grasshopper. I have NetFabb Basic sitting in my Applications folder. http://www.netfabb.com/downloadcenter.php?basic=1 Plus: if you're going to play in the world of manufacturing on a Mac, don't...

Re: Dino Jam!

The only time I've had that issue is with PLA in an E3D V6.

Retraction was the culprit. Have a poke around, there's plenty of writeup - but the short version is get your retraction short (2mm max) and slow (15mm/s) and you should be much better off.

Re: 3D Printing to injection moulding

Or maybe roto-moulding. But a thin walled 200mm part will need an injection machine about the size of an SUV. If you can find a local-ish injeciton company, it might be worth sorting out an NDA and talking to them about what's involved in jobbing it out. Brace yourself, though - moulds aren't cheap,...

Re: Rendering Artifacts?

If I was in CNC mindset I'd say you had incremental mode on your arcs instead of absolute, or vice versa. But this ain't that.

I'd say install a copy of the free netfabb tool, run the STL through it and see if there are any issues, repair them and try again.

Clever work on the keys - will adjusting the set screws also affect axial angle as well as runout, though?

Can't wait (as I'm sure you can't yourself!) to see it all together and running.

If one made something like the part-daddy, you would have sufficient mass budget to have the laser tube (including water cooling), and a lens/air assist mechanism. Build your own CNC has had reasonable success with that sort of method. A diode laser is usually fairly low power, but it could take se...

Those wedges went in really well. So well, in fact, that I snapped 'em trying to dig them out again to remove the plates. Ooops. I should have checked the parts in a CAD package before just printing them too - no McMaster Carr here in Oz and I'm struggling to find inserts big enough for the holes i...

Re: Question about retracts

I got the latest alpha of MatterControl the other day and have noticed the opposite - it's doing retracts on infill before following the infill around (ie not crossing perimeter) until it reaches the next place. There are some settings now dealing with retracts between islands and things like that, ...

G'day, and welcome. Good luck with the build - seems the common advice is to 1) download geneb's assembly manual; and 2) follow it to the letter. No shortcuts, "I have a better way of doing that!" etc the first time around, get it running then start making changes. Worked for me, any road!...

Re: Enclosure build to print ABS and Nylon bigger and faster

Looking good. Just realised I have spare acrylic from making an enclosure for a CNC mill, so it's time to get onto this I reckon. I've moved most of my cabling to a loom which runs up the back ages ago, so no worries on the channels. Might modify the Z tower top and bottom to support the conduit, bu...

Re: Liquid mixing apparatus

The other nice things about peristaltic pumps are: 1. You can print the mechanism; 2. They can be used as a dosing pump. Given the size of the lobes on the pump, their location relative to the tube and thus the engaged stroke length on the tube, and the tube diameter you can determine the amount of ...

Don't forget VirtualBox (free). Especially as something just to try out some free software, it's pretty good. I haven't used Parallels for more than a couple of hours before. What's missing is a torque/rpm chart. Is it going to be like the cheapo chinese spindle I have which cracks a sad at anything under 5000RPM and doesn't really have that much torque, rather, the claimed power is coming from the 24000 RPM more than anything else. Or is it going to be like an old fashi...

Indeed, and it's by far and away the nicest bit of free 3D parametric CAD software out there. Hugely popular with the hobby CNC gang too, as it's got at least 3 axis CAM thrown into the freebie version which works pretty well.

For one year, for the moment, cloud dependent and totally reliant on the goodwill of Autodesk (known for their goodwill...?)

It's like the free baggie of methamphetamine from the dealer you meet at high school... there are probably strings attached.
