My shopvac already has that arrangement built in, Gene, but the paper filter still managed to clog up all the time. Since adding a proper cyclone (the sloped walls etc add a lot more effectiveness to the inlet/outlet arrangement) it's been so much better again.

You're fighting physics. As the melted plastic cools, it tries to shrink. ABS is particularly bad for it. Because each layer trying to shrink is bonded to the layer below, it gets held by the adhesion force to the bed. In small parts it doesn't matter so much but, in big parts, it gets more and more...

Cheap, easy to print, stiff, its downfalls of low melt and crappy inter-layer adhesion don't affect you in this application and it flashes to smoke as soon as hot metal touches it.
