Re: 3D Laser scanner DIY.
Wow that's awesome! I really want to build a bigger version of this in order to scan yacht floor plans. I'm using a big, bulky CMM now (A ProDim Proliner) and its limitations are showing.
Does the scan have accurate dimensions, or is it just a point cloud that must be scaled to a chosen size?

Re: 39 cm hight print
It was a prototype for a black powder rifle made by a major manufacturer here in Atlanta. They used it to verify ergonomics, and as a trade show prop. It was never fired, never intended to be. That one job payed for the printer and then some. Back on topic, is there a way you can print the part layi...

Re: Building a new printer - Karbon Kossel PRO
Generic, I have some of the drilled and tapped ball bearings, M4 thread. I will probably swap over to these, as I'm not a fan of the bearing/socket head/JB weld arrangement. The drilled and tapped bearings are slightly bigger than 3/8, I think they're 10mm. Slight adjustment to firmware but no big d...

Re: 39 cm hight print
Aspect ratio of the part also plays a huge roll, by which I mean how tall it is compared to how skinny it is. You have a crazy aspect ratio! If the part is tall and skinny, it won't have much surface area holding it to the print bed. As the part gets taller, any force the nozzle applies to the print...

Re: PEI print bed surface experiments
I went ahead and made up a second one with the "Windex trick", using the .030" material from Amazon, matte side up. I CNC'd the circle on my mill. This glass has PEI on one side, Kapton on the other. Looks like Kapton is "sooo last year" at this point, so it'll probably be c...

Re: Building a new printer - Karbon Kossel PRO
The pulley could have a slot cut into the middle Genius! Now, how to cut the slot? I have CNC...make a fixture and use a tiny end mill? Go to town with a cutoff wheel in a dremel? Hmm. Perhaps this is a situation that calls for a hack saw. It holds fine as is, as the tension of the belt keeps the t...

Re: PEI print bed surface experiments
Hey guys, I did something a little different when I installed my PEI sheet. I used a 12x12" piece of 468 tape, and I used the old sign maker's trick of floating it on Windex to aid installation. So, the procedure went like this: 1: Prep the glass with windex, then acetone. 2: Spray windex on th...

Re: Building a new printer - Karbon Kossel PRO
My Alligator board shipped on Friday! Time to get serious about the mechanics on this thing. The only real parts remaining are end stop switch mounts (2mm carbon fiber) and the printed parts for the linear skates. The skate parts clamp and tension the belts, mount the ball bearings for the mag arms ...

Re: Building a new printer - Karbon Kossel PRO
You only need .04-.03" PEI, 1/8" is pretty overkill, and will probably promote a marginally higher heat gradient. Thanks Nylocke, I read some of the Amazon reviews and folks are saying the thicker stuff is nicer to work with. I'll try the .030 and maybe get a piece of .060 as well. Generi...

Looks good, are you going to keep it on the rolling toolbox? Seems like a great idea for a machine stand.

You're welcome. To pepper this thread with technical terms: these feet are ginormous! I threaded the bottom center hole of my vertical extrusions and used a 1/4-20 x 1" screw to hold them on. Did a little assembly this afternoon...all of a sudden it went from a pile of parts to something resemb...

That's pretty cool!
Have you considered printing in ABS and smoothing with acetone vapor?
I would tighten up the clearance between the impeller and shroud as much as possible.

New addition to the shop - CNC Gantry Mill
I have been scheming and planning to build a new gantry CNC for a couple of years now. I had a lovely 2x4 foot homebrewed jobbie when I lived in Colorado Springs, but I lost it and all my other worldly possessions in the Waldo Canyon wildfire of 2012. Such is life. I had my eye on an Openbeam OX or ...
