Re: Ebay vs Thingiverse

In a practical sense: once you post it, you lose control of it. Not just print files. I spent some years in the photography game and it's worse there. People plaster their images with watermarks and copyright notices and all sorts of things like it's going to be that image that sells for a million b...

Re: How to easily retrofit third wire for end stops

I would recommend STRONGLY against using the frame as a ground for signal paths. On a wooden platform machine like these, the frames are floating antennae for all kinds of EMF rubbish. They're also exposed, so any oops moment electrically as you futz with the hot end is potentially going to toast so...

Re: My first long haul print

Cheers. Nervous day, waiting for something to crap out at 23 hours into the 24. Annoyed when the next part failed but so, so glad it didn't happen on the big bit. For anyone still wondering "wtf is that?" here's the link to the part: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1068443" onclick=&...

Re: My first long haul print

Did someone say something something bad at cleaning? My Max is a bit of a victim of the same phenomenon :) Came out really, really well. Used Isaac (doodaddoes.com.au) primo black ABS and the stuff is lovely. Paranoid me decided this would be a good print to use a raft and ABS juice to prevent lifti...

thermocouple with a bonus multimeter attached available all over the place for about $25USD. BangGood, AliExpress, fleaBay, you name it, they all got 'em.

Re: Poor fusion with new E3D v6

^^ This.

Step one is grab a thermocouple and make sure you're actually getting a hot end at the temperature the Max thinks it's at.

Even then, IMO 228º is way too low for good inter-layer adhesion. I run my ABS prints at 255º and they are rock solid.

Re: My first long haul print

A nice place to print.

If I was to do this kind of thing regularly I'd be setting up an enclosure in the shed with a smoke alarm wired to a solenoid on an extinguisher as well as a thermal fuse on the heater block.

My first long haul print

So I've had my v1 Max for a couple of years now. Had the initial rush of printing countless gazillions of the calibration cubes, torture tests and pyramids then kinda skipped the whole "printing pretty faff" thing and got down to making stuff that was useful. All along, if it took longer t...

Re: DX.com (Deal Extreme) Cautionary Tale

I've used DealExtreme for years. They do a lot of rubbish, but occasionally they come up with some gems (I used to get a lot of torch stuff off 'em). But I learned early on that they're slow to ship. I suspect they collect orders from us until they have some MOQ for an item, place the order on their...

Re: How to convince your wife to let you display????

I have the same issue here, but it's with myself. I've seen plenty of prints that have inspired a "phwoar, that's awesome". I have a few on the shelf in the study. But I've yet to see a print come out of my or anyone else's printer that I'd put on the shelf in the lounge. Because cheap pla...

Re: iPhone and V2 Print

I had an issue on my CNC router where, after a few hours, turning the spindle on would disappear the machine's USB connection from the computer. It was only when I belted myself plugging the USB cable back in after removing it that I twigged: The unshielded spindle motor was inductively coupling bac...

Re: iPhone and V2 Print

The whole 'print from sd' thing annoys me mightily. I don't have easy control over the machine or print job like I do from a decent host program and I've had problems with it dropping out mid print on SD. USB itself isn't the issue, it's the host machine's handling of USB events. I have learnt by no...

Neat-o!

Looked so lightweight and spindly on his photos, but seeing the carriage in your hand gave it a bit more perspective. Gonna be a pretty chunky little machine when you're done!

Re: PC Can't Connect to Printer - Mac can

The access denied may well be because it thinks the port is already taken by another app. The app that "owns" it is quite possibly an earlier run that didn't shut down properly. Restarting the computer may free it up and let you have another go.

cnczone. Any home build there gets a fast, fat following - and most of the guys watching are either experienced machine nerds looking for something interesting or n00bs about to drop the hammer on a unit or build, looking for cheap/good options. If you get this thing to fly, it will keep both kinds ...

Nice. Except... If I'm reading it right, the vertical screws in the 2nd image are pulling the bottom strips in to compress acetal U shaped gib blocks, am I guessing right that you just haven't included the crossways set screws in the model yet? I think you're going to have a fun time correctly tensi...

Re: Printing Very Skinny Parts

There's a bit of a range between where ABS starts to slump and where it's hot enough to extrude. On big prints, it's no problem - the start of this layer has time to cool down past the slump temperature before the nozzle returns to it to start the next layer. On small parts, though, the next layer g...

I don't get my panties in a bunch over links anymore. Most forums have that many ads anyway to pay to keep them running that I've kinda grown blind and I'm happy to ignore all of it. Suggestion: post a buildup thread in the "other machines" section and make it more a technically interestin...

Re: 3D printers: gateway drug?

Something that big would be nice but I've no room for it either. A recent purchase for home renos was a vertical panel saw (slide the sheet timber in standing on one edge, circular saw runs down vertical rails) which has me thinking, though... I wonder how feasible it would be to do something simila...

I've had manual gear (mill, lathe, drill press, grinders, linisher etc) for 15 years or so in the shed. All cheap chinese crap, work happily with steel etc if you're comfortable with tolerances around a millimetre. And trying to cut round profiles with an X and Y handwheel? Yeah, I never got that go...

3D printers: gateway drug?

The whole 3D printer thing seduced me with its easy setup, and "grab the cad and hit print" promises. Of course it hasn't quite been that simple but it's been intriguing, frustrating and rewarding. Learning limits and parallels to subtractive machining, after a couple of years I wasn't get...

I was more referring to the wall thickness on the inner spindle tube, the outer stationary one looked fine. And now I look at your renders again, forget what I said about flex: my 4th axis headstock only has a single central blade from the foot to hold everything rather than one at front and back li...
