You don't like ice fishing?Batteau62 wrote:I tapped them. I thought about printing them. Basically just extended the post on the nut enough to get 4-5 threads and a slot to tighten it. I did have to drill the back plate to get deeper for a normal tap. I don't have a bottoming tap for 1/4x20". Seems to stay tight pretty well. I'm hoping it won't back out from reeling friction? We'll see in the spring

I realized I hadn't posted a photo of the completed Bling, Bling Gold and Black reel:

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
I does look nice. Let's see what happens with a 10 pound bass on the end of the string.
Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
I actually think it would hold up quite well. This particular reel is very strong with nice smooth action. I'll be giving it a try as soon as this ice melts!

you could probably test that pretty easy with some weights installed at the end of the line...Eaglezsoar wrote:I does look nice. Let's see what happens with a 10 pound bass on the end of the string.

True but it is more fun to have a real fish at the end of the line, plus you get to eat it!bubbasnow wrote:you could probably test that pretty easy with some weights installed at the end of the line...Eaglezsoar wrote:I does look nice. Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
BUT the way fishing goes... you would catch a record fish, something freaking huge, and the reel would break because it wasent tested on the shore. But at least you would have a good storyEaglezsoar wrote:True but it is more fun to have a real fish at the end of the line, plus you get to eat it!bubbasnow wrote:you could probably test that pretty easy with some weights installed at the end of the line...Eaglezsoar wrote:I does look nice. Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
This is cool, Steve is at a fishing shop doing demos, etc up in MI today. He asked for my fly reel files last week. I think I spy a red and gold repel there in the back left:

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Thought I would upload a shot of my first attempt. Thanks for the files Michael, great work.
The reel works better than I was expecting.
Probably have another go with some better quality filament.

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Excellent scobo. That looks great. I've had a few guys send me their "reel and fish" photos and they do work! I've caught a few on mine too. I am working on a new design and also a spinning reel. Stay tuned.
cheers,
Michael

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Just wondered how you achieved the pattern on the gold and black version.
Is it a new design of the spool or a tweak of the print settings ?

It uses KISSlicers' curve infill with 0 shell layers.

Cheers, might give that a go. Looks really nice.
Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
If you make a spinning reel, I would like to try those files out. I admire the beauty of fly fishing etc, but I don't think I have the patience to learn and use it.
Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Here's my second attempt in black with a honeycombe pattern on the spool ....

Looks awesome scobo. You can't go wrong with basic black. Have you fished it yet?

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Are .stl files available for the reels.
Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
nitewatchman, yes they are but you have to ask! Just PM me with your email address. I am asking people to agree:
1) not to post the files anywhere
2) you may not sell reels that you print
3) if someone asks you for the files, just send them to me and I'll hook them up
If you agree, just PM me, ask for the files and say you agree to the conditions!
cheers,
Michael

Haven't got round to it yet, the season's closed here in the UK, but I'm sure it'll make a great wee brook reel.mhackney wrote:Looks awesome scobo. You can't go wrong with basic black. Have you fished it yet?

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Here is my print of Michael's new version. Thanks for the file, I enjoyed making it today.
Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
Looks great techstorage! Black and white is a classic combination. I'm guessing you sliced with Slic3r?
I just got some of the copper filled PLA and bronze filled PLA from ColorFABB (via PrintedSolid in the US). It is very interesting looking stuff. I can't wait to try printing a reel with it. It is very heavy. I think it is something like 80% metal powder filled.
cheers,
Michael

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
mhackney its 90/10 metal to PLA i think... Its pretty hard to print with on the rostock... There are a lot of little things that need to be done... Most notably PTFE in the feeder, and slow it down.
Im running a new printed feeder, with 10-15mm/s for my copper and bronze.
I plan to print the reel soon too. just cant find the time

Re: 3D Printed Fly Fishing Reel
I've been getting a lot of interest in my reel over the last few weeks. On 12/22/15 I posted a description of how I designed the reel and what I was trying to accomplish on my blog. I also presented my new version 5 design and all of the enhancements I've made based on my experience and feedback from the many folks who have asked for the files to print. The story got picked up by a number of blogs and forums. I was also contacted by an editor at Field & Stream Magazine to do an article on 3D printing and fly fishing. I printed a special reel to match the editor's column, Hook Shots, in black and red with the skull logo on the spool retainer. It turned out super fantastic! I am also printing two "traveling demo" reels to give to a couple of bloggers/writers who are attending the big fly fishing trade shows that start this month.
Here is an exploded view with annotations on the new version 5 design.

I've also been doing a lot of interesting work to coax the slicer into doing special things - like creating an engraved look. I have a bunch of reels to photo and I'll post those this weekend.
cheers,
Michael
