Tenkara fly line holder

In addition to my interest in reels and reel making, I am a big advocate for tenkara - a form of traditional Japanese fly fishing. I designed and printed this line holder to store the line. There are commercial versions similar to this available but mine are very small and light, biodegradable PLA, and I can make the bore fit my rods perfectly. Plus they are fun to print!

I've uploaded the line holder to Thingiverse.

They have made quite a stir on the tenkara group on Facebook. Looks like I'll be producing these for sale. I might need another printer!

You might need another building! You haven't even begun to print the telescoping rod. (and think of the thousands of flies)

It's remarkable - I wasn't planning to offer these for sale but I had so many people literally beg me to sell them some. And every order so far has been for 5 spools each. At this rate I might need to build another Rostock! And some of the other guys are asking what printer I recommend... No contest on that! SeeMeCNC Rostock Max baby!

Are you using a J-Head for your PLA or the SeemeCNC hotend?

Yup, some of the guys have asked for some special things. The possibilities are endless. Right now I can sell these as quickly as I can print them so I'll finish up this lot while I work on some new designs. Yin-Yang is always a classic!

What are those in the photo? Very cool.

Have you considered printing a two or three part mould and shooting it with glass powder reinforced epoxy or polyester for production? I'd hazard a guess it would work out cheaper, faster and stronger for cranking out lots of 'em...

Hi Captain Starfish (nice avatar BTW!).

I don't think this part warrants the effort, I don't think there is a big market for these and the folks buying them are just as intrigued with owning something that was 3D printed. Also, one of the reasons I chose this particular design/fill pattern is that it can't be reproduced by molding (unless it is a lost mold process).

It would be interesting to try and investment cast one in bronze or other metal. Thier thinness could be trickey though...

Those are tsubas - they're hand guards for Japanese Katanas and Wakazashis(sp).
