extruder with kysan geared stepper -is it worth it?

Post by bvandiepenbos »

Hi all,
I know a few of you are using the 5:1 geared stepper on the ez-struder, I am wondering if it works better, was it worth it? any issues? I am considering trying one myself. would appreciate some feedback.
The stock stepper does not have quite enough power to reliably push filament fast enough for me, the extruder is normally the limiting factor on print speed.
I will have to order at least (4) to make Kysans minimum order... anybody else want one? I will sell at my cost ($36.00) plus shipping to you.

need advice, which one of these is correct?

I am not sure what is different, both are same price

Thanks

I thought about putting a gear head on my when I first purchased it. Now that I have had it for awhile I have found the non geared extruder does a fine job of stripping the filament without it, so why increase the torque on the filament if it strips now?

I don't know which one to use :-). The second one says "10 kg-cm of holding torque". The first one has a data sheet where it says 9 kg-cm of holding torque.

The first one has 750mm wires.
The second one has 300mm wires.
They both have 8mm shafts as do all of these types of motors.
If you place an order I will take 2 of them.

stripping filament can be caused by to many short quick retractions, it helps to disable retract on every layer change and in every small area, slic3r has settings for those things.
I don't have stripping just wimpy motor back slipping... click, click, click, arrgh! drives me crazy.
yes I have tried different current settings w/o help.
FYI I have much less issues on the machine that has a J-Head, the J has less back pressure than the SeeMe hot end.
Need more torque !
and maybe stronger spring on ezstruder drive roller.

Thanks Eagle for clarifying motor difference. Longer wires would be my choice.

OK Eagle, 2 for you and 1 for me...
any other takers?
I would like to order in the next few days.

Oh, I already have made adapter plate for my ezmount, If anyone is concerned about that. I would even throw in the plate with the motor for free on this order of motors.

What I still need to find or modify is the drive roller for 8mm shaft.
Any ideas for source with 8mm hole already?
Other than Trinity Labs.

Brian, the first page of the Xnaron magnetic arms thread shows an extruder he uses that uses that motor.
http://forum.seemecnc.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1704

He also gives the part number of the gear needed to make the extruder Part number: s10t05m022s0508 https://sdp-si.com/eStore/Catalog
He also posts the printable extruder body on his Github - https://github.com/xnaron/Xnaron-Magnarms-for-Rostock (Bowden Extruder)
There are also many extruder bodies for this motor on Thingiverse listed under Makergear Extruders.
SDP-SI is presently out of stock on the gear but they should have it within a couple of weeks, you'll have to keep checking.
I have built one of these extruders and there is no more powerful extruder that I have found, they are great!
This motor is the same motor used on the Makergear M2 printer.
If I have to I would buy the other three instead of two but I do want a minimum of two so go ahead and order them.

OK DavidF, one for you. thanks

Man, Eagle you are a encyclopedia of info, thanks.
That extruder looks perfect... but I will probably machine it out of aluminum.
I did not know a spur gear would work for drive, is it as good as hobbed roller like seeme one? I could bore out one of those to 8mm.

Any other takers?
more will mean we all save a bit on shipping.

Makergear has been using that same spur gear for years and is known as one of the best extruders on the market. You can also bore out
a MK7 or similar such as used in the EZstruder. The motor mounting holes for the geared motor are not the same as a normal stepper.

Thanks for creating that and pointing that out. It should help out a lot when trying to adapt a geared stepper.

Depending on what size nozzle you're printing with and what layer height - the steps per mm gets pretty spread out. When Phil was using the .35 nozzle and printing .07mm layers, you could almost hear the stepper making individual clicks...

I doubt very much that you could tell a difference in print quality without magnification, but there's got to be some difference, right?

Jim,
the 5:1 gear ratio will give it a bunch more torque, which the ezStruder badly needs, you should still be able to retract fast enough. Steps per mm will need changed to 5X current value of direct drive. So you will also have finer resolution when doing low layer heights and thin extrusion widths.
Hopefully this will also enable me to use even a .25 nozzle.! :)

I would take one of the geared steppers, I've been contemplating weather or not I wanted to use one.
