Firmware loading issue

Postby karter59 » Wed Jan 24, 2018 10:49 pm

Hi all,
I had a search through the board but didn't find anything relevant to this problem.
I've had my Rostock Max V3 running for over a year without any problems. I decided to do some upgrades. Main upgrade is to the .9 degree stepper motors. I modified the firmware in the Arduino IDE. I sent the clear eeprom sketch to the Rambo fine. When I attempt to send the firmware sketch, It fails. I turned on verbose output on the loading. It does the read of the board fine but then it comes up with "Writing | avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
It repeats this 6 more times then reports "avrdude: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer"
These reports start over again for 3 more cycles then it comes up with "An error occurred while uploading the sketch"
Any ideas on what I'm missing?

Roger

The "solutions" for this are all over the map. https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?PHPS ... =135451.15

But I would try a different PC to do your programming for starters.

I had tried all of those suggestions and more before posting. Today I programmed another control board (a Azteeg X3 Pro) with no issues with the file that I was trying to upload into the Rambo. I then removed the Rambo from the printer to look for any obvious issues with it but nothing.
I did notice today that if I don't have external power to the board, even the clear eeprom sketch won't upload.

I would try re-flashing the bootloader next.

Tried burning the bootloader today. Completes the write but then fails on the verification. I tried to then upload firmware in case the affected area of flash isn't used. Write ends up failing. I think the board is toast.

It doesn't sound good...

And it's got the surface-mount 2560, which if you aren't set up for it, is pretty hard to replace.

Edit:

The problem could also be in the ATMEGA16U2-MU, but you'd be in the same boat soldering-wise.

These are just standard Arduino 2560's right? If so, get a new one from eBay and pop your old shield onto it.
