Are the part cooling fans the weakest performance link?

Postby Noircogi » Wed Feb 28, 2018 6:28 pm

In the past, I normally use ABS for UV resistance and the ability to use solvent cement on the parts I make.

Since the Artemis came with a roll of PLA, and I need to get my Simplify3D profile tuned, I've been printing 3DBenchies in PLA.

The printer itself is really solid, precise and amazingly quiet. Who would have thought the cooling fan for the controller board would be the loudest thing about it?

As I try to get near the rated speeds on something small like the benchy, it really seems like the performance of the part fans is insufficient for the rest of the machine. With the fans at max speed, I needed to turn the minimum layer time up to 20 seconds to get the middle part of the bow to not curl up.

Have others seen the same thing?

Since I've been debugging a lot during the cold winter, I've got the machine near my bed (live in a studio, but with garage and mudroom... go figure).

I replaced the top fan with this:
ARCTIC Low Noise Case Fans

One thing to note is that the duet board reverses the + and - for the fan connector versus the standard PCs use. This fan can't handle reversing the wires.

If I ever get the machine in stable condition, I'll replace the fan in the PSU as well.

As for sound, I'll have to get more grease since I've wiped off most of mine through fiddling.

Noircogi, if you're buying regular ABS, there's no UV stabilizers in it.

With respect to the part cooling, it's perfectly adequate. The problem is that PLA can't dump heat as fast as you want it to. In order for a fan to help that, it would damn near blow the part off the bed. If you want to print a small part really fast, print a few of them at once or slow down the print speed (and correspondingly, the hot end temperature).

DON'T OPEN THE PSU! unless you know what you are doing.

Most of the capacitors in there are probably small smoothing capacitors; nevertheless there is a reason why it is in a metal case, and that reason is shock hazard.
